Top Indian Business Tycoons' Philanthropy

The EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 highlights the substantial contributions of 119 Indian business magnates who donated Rs 5 crore or more during FY23, collectively contributing Rs 8,445 crore for various philanthropic initiatives.

Notably, Azim Premji, the founder chairman of Wipro, secured the second position by donating Rs 1,774 crore, marking a remarkable 267% increase from FY22.

Transformation in Top 10 Philanthropic Donations

The top 10 philanthropists on the list, including the Bajaj family, Cyrus S Poonawalla, Adar Poonawalla, and Rohini Nilekani, cumulatively donated Rs 5,806 crore in FY23, significantly surpassing the combined donation of Rs 3,034 crore in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022.

Remarkable Growth in Major Donors

An impressive 14 individuals, up from six the previous year, donated over Rs 100 crore, signifying a surge in substantial contributions to philanthropic causes. Moreover, 24 philanthropists, an increase from 12 in the previous year, donated over Rs 50 crore, and 47 generously donated over Rs 20 crore.

Shiv Nadar leads the Shiv Nadar Foundation, established in 1994, which operates on the principles of 'Creative Philanthropy.' The foundation's endeavors are primarily focused on art and culture. Key initiatives include the SSN Institutions, Vidya Gyan, Shiv Nadar University, Shiv Nadar School, Shiksha Initiative, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. The foundation has dedicated a total of $1.1 billion across these transformative initiatives.

Mukesh Ambani and his family, led by Reliance Industries, made a substantial philanthropic impact with a donation of Rs 376 crore in FY23, primarily dedicated to enhancing the education and healthcare sectors. Among women, Rohini Nilekani of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies stood out as the leading female philanthropist, donating Rs 170 crore and ranking 10th on the list.

Several corporations, including Ashok Leyland, UPL, Macrotech Developers, Jindal Steel & Power, and Ambuja Cements, surpassed the government-mandated 2% contribution towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 reveals that education remains the most favored cause for donations, with 62 philanthropists collectively contributing Rs 1,547 crore. Following closely, Rs 1,345 crore was directed towards arts, culture, and heritage, and Rs 633 crore towards healthcare.
