India's missile woman Tessy Thomas bags Dr Abdul Kalam Award 2022

News Synopsis

India's missile woman, Dr. Tessy Thomas, a scientist and Director General (Aero Systems) at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), will get the APJ Abdul Kalam Award this year.

The prize was recently declared by the selection committee, which was led by AP Majeed Khan, Chancellor of Noorul Islam University in collaboration with NINS Medicity.

According to a press release, the award is jointly organised by the Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education at Kumarakovil in the Kanniyakumari district and Noorul Islam Institute of Medical Science and Research Foundation (NIMS) Medicity since 2019 to honour public servants who have excelled and achieved in their various fields of employment.

The award will be presented by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan at a ceremony on July 19 at NIMS Medicity, Neyyartinkarai.

According to the press release, the winner will also get a commemorative trophy, a certificate of appreciation, and a monetary prize of Rs 1 lakh. Tessy Thomas is the first woman scientist to lead India's missile programme.

The Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Award, named after the 11th President of India and aerospace scientist A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is awarded by the Government of Tamil Nadu in recognition of contributions on scientific development, humanities and students' welfare.
