Mariah Carey had previously hinted about her suffering, but in 2009 she came out and acknowledged she had been the victim of emotional and mental abuse. The mega-star was promoting a film that deals with domestic abuse and stated that it was nothing new to her. Carey married music entrepreneur Tommy Mottola in 1993, but the couple divorced five years later."There are several types of abuse... emotionally, mentally, and in other ways," the singer explained to Larry King. It's a terrible situation. I just think you get yourself into a situation where you feel stuck...It was difficult for me to break free since I was in a relationship that was not only a marriage but also a business, and the person in charge of my life."

Everyone is aware of Rihanna's violent relationship with the pop diva and her former partner Chris Brown. The rapper attacked Rihanna in a vehicle the night before hitting Grammys in 2009.
