December 6, 2024, marks the 69th death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice. Known as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the day sees thousands gather at Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai to honor his remarkable legacy and reflect on his contributions to equality and justice.

What's Closed on Mahaparinirvan Diwas?

Government Offices

In Mumbai and its suburbs, a local holiday is observed on Mahaparinirvan Diwas. As a result, state and semi-government offices will remain closed for the day.

Liquor Shops

December 6 is designated as a dry day by the Mumbai city collector. Consequently, all liquor shops will remain shut throughout the day.

What's Open on Mahaparinirvan Diwas?

Banks: All public and private banks, including prominent ones like the State Bank of India, will remain operational as usual, ensuring uninterrupted banking services.

Stock Markets: The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will also function during their regular operating hours.

Special Arrangements for Visitors at Chaitya Bhoomi

Transportation Measures

To accommodate the influx of visitors to Chaitya Bhoomi, the Central Railway has made several arrangements. These include holding areas at key stations across Mumbai to manage the surge effectively. Additionally, 12 extra suburban trains—six on the main line and six on the harbor line—will operate on December 5 and 6, offering additional capacity for travelers.

Traffic Management

The Mumbai Traffic Police have issued special advisories to manage congestion and ensure smooth movement. Temporary entry and exit points will be set up at Dadar station to handle the crowd. These measures will be in effect from 6:00 AM on December 5 until midnight on December 7.
