Govt Appoints Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani as New CDS Ahead of Anil Chauhan Exit

In a key leadership transition for India’s armed forces, the government has appointed N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), a role central to enhancing jointness and strategic coordination among the three services.

Appointment Announced Ahead of Current CDS Tenure Completion

The Government of India has officially designated Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani (Retd.) as the new CDS. According to reports, he will assume office from the date he takes charge and will continue in the role until further orders.

He will succeed Anil Chauhan, the incumbent CDS, who is set to complete his tenure on May 30, 2026. The transition comes at a time when India is steadily advancing its military modernisation and theatre command restructuring plans.

Dual Role: CDS and Secretary of Department of Military Affairs

General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command

Prior to that, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024. This command is one of the most strategically important formations of the Indian Army, overseeing operations across a vast and sensitive geographical area.

His tenure in these key positions highlights his deep understanding of both operational and strategic dimensions of defence management.
