Government Partners with WhatsApp to Combat Cyber Fraud and Online Scams

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has partnered with WhatsApp, owned by Meta, to strengthen cybersecurity efforts in India and protect users from online fraud. This collaboration aims to expand the ‘Scam Se Bacho’ campaign—Meta’s initiative to educate users about digital safety and prevent fraudulent activities on online platforms.

• Exploring WhatsApp integration with DoT’s Sanchar Saathi initiative to improve citizen-centric services.

• Working with the Digital Intelligence Unit (DIU) of DoT to take proactive action against cyber fraud and telecom misuse.

Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Meta, met Union Minister of Communications and Development of the North East Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, to discuss the effectiveness of this collaboration.

“The best way to prevent people from falling victim to scams and online fraud is to ensure they know what to look out for and how to stay safe,” said Kaplan.
“By working with the Department of Telecommunications, we can combine our technological expertise with the government’s commitment to citizen safety and equip Indians with the knowledge they need to stay protected.”
