News Synopsis

On October 1, Facebook will discontinue its hyperlocal feature called Neighborhoods. This platform allowed people to connect with their neighbors, discover new places in their neighborhood, and become a part of the local community. It was first introduced in 2022 in countries such as Canada and the United States, with people given the option to join the service and create a separate profile.

However, it was never widely released during this time, implying that Meta did not find a major purpose for its existence. The decision to close Neighborhoods is most likely an indication of this.

Meta has not provided a clear answer or reason for this decision, but the company's recent emphasis on cost-cutting may have played a role. Furthermore, it's unlikely that the closure of Neighborhoods will elicit a strong reaction from users or the company's shareholders.

“When we launched Neighborhoods, our mission was to bring local communities closer together, and we’ve learned the best way to do this is through groups" Facebook has said about Neighborhoods. This was viewed as a digital directory, with others able to view your profile and vice versa. Facebook, like any other social media platform these days, had established guidelines for how Neighborhoods would function.
