ChatGPT Now Lets You Connect GitHub Repos for Deep Code Analysis

OpenAI has introduced a powerful new capability in ChatGPT that enables users to directly link their GitHub repositories with the chatbot. This functionality is part of the Deep Research agent, which was officially announced last week. It allows the AI chatbot to generate in-depth reports using both the user's personal repositories and publicly available ones.

Currently, this feature is being rolled out exclusively to paid subscribers of ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that once a new or edited repository is created, it may take up to five minutes before it becomes visible via the GitHub connector in the Deep Research tool.

GitHub Connector Now Integrated with ChatGPT’s Deep Research

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI Developers’ official handle announced the global release of this feature. The GitHub connector in Deep Research is now available for Team users worldwide, along with Plus and Pro subscribers. However, users from the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK are currently excluded from this rollout.

A video demonstration was also shared, highlighting how users can interact with this new tool. Eligible users can ask a question in the Deep Research interface, after which they’ll see a GitHub connect button. Clicking it allows ChatGPT to access both private and public repositories for deeper analysis.

“Ask a question and the deep research agent will read and search the repo's source code and PRs, returning a detailed report with citations,” OpenAI said.

How It Works and Data Privacy

According to OpenAI’s documentation, the GitHub integration is currently in beta, and GitHub's terms and conditions apply when using this feature. Deep Research enables ChatGPT to extract live data from GitHub repositories, including:

• Source code

• Readme files

• Pull requests

• Other repository documents

Once connected, the AI agent reviews and analyzes this content to offer meaningful insights and structured reports with source references.

Importantly, OpenAI emphasized that if Plus and Pro users have the “Improve the model for everyone” setting enabled, their GitHub data may be used to train future AI models. If this setting is turned off, the data won’t be stored or used for training.

Furthermore, OpenAI assured that it does not retain data from its business offerings, such as Team, Enterprise, Edu, or API users.
