Minister Hardeep S. Puri Updates on the Smart Cities Mission

Mr. Hardeep S. Puri, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Petroleum, and Natural Gas, provided an overview of the progress of the Smart Cities Mission during a meeting with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' consultative committee. His updates shed light on the critical role of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) in implementing the mission at the city level and emphasized the significant impact that ideas generated within the 100 smart cities will have on shaping India's urban future.

Empowering Cities through the Smart Cities Mission

The Smart Cities Mission, launched on June 25, 2015, aims to transform cities by employing "smart solutions" to enhance the quality of life for citizens. The mission focuses on providing core infrastructure, promoting a clean and sustainable environment, and ensuring a decent quality of living. To effectively execute this transformative vision, the mission operates through a network of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) at the city level. These SPVs play a crucial role in monitoring and driving the initiatives under the Smart Cities Mission.

Real-Time Monitoring and Collaboration for Progress

The Smart Cities Mission utilizes a Real-Time Geographical Management Information System (GMIS) to track and report on the progress of projects as they are being implemented. The system is overseen by an Apex Committee led by the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This enables efficient monitoring and ensures transparency in the implementation of the mission's initiatives. At the city level, a Smart City Advisory Forum (SCAF) is established, consisting of representatives from various stakeholders such as the Mayor, District Collector, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, local youth, technical experts, and other relevant parties. The SCAFs serve as platforms for guidance, collaboration, and collective decision-making.

Progress and Completion of Projects

The Smart Cities Mission encompasses around 7,800 projects with an estimated value of US$ 22 billion (Rs. 1.8 lakh crore). As of now, over 5,700 projects (approximately 73% of the total) worth US$ 13 billion (Rs. 1.1 lakh crore) have been successfully completed. The remaining projects are projected to be completed by June 30, 2024. These initiatives encompass a wide range of aspects, including improved economic standards, smart governance, climate-sensitive sustainable environments, vibrant public spaces, digital access, and health and hygiene measures. The implementation of the Smart Cities Mission marks a significant step towards urban development reforms and enhancing the ease of living index for the benefit of the Indian population.

ThinkWithNiche News' conclusion

Under the leadership of Mr. Hardeep S. Puri, the Smart Cities Mission in India has made substantial progress in its goal to create sustainable and future-ready urban centers. The use of Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) at the city level has played a pivotal role in effectively implementing the mission's initiatives, ensuring that core infrastructure, clean environments, and a high quality of life are accessible to citizens.

The Real-Time Geographical Management Information System (GMIS) has further enhanced transparency and monitoring, enabling efficient reporting and tracking of project progress. Through the Smart City Advisory Forum (SCAF), diverse stakeholders collaborate to provide guidance and foster collaborative decision-making, ensuring that the voice of the community is heard.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, committed to enhancing the ease of living index, is dedicated to empowering cities and raising the quality of life for its citizens.
