News Synopsis

According to a

new survey by the National Family Health Survey (NHFS),

only 32% of married women aged 15 to 49 are employed, but married men in the country have a far higher employment rate, at 98 percent for the same age group. In India, working after marriage is still a relatively new concept. Because of family and domestic duties, most women engage in fewer employment or jobs after marriage than males.

The survey demonstrates that there are still significant gender gaps in India. The good news is that the percentage of married working women has grown significantly from 31% in last year's NFHS report (NFHS - 4) to 32% in 2019-2021, according to the new NHFS - 5.

Furthermore, according to the

Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE),

around 21 million women have left the labour, leaving only 9% of the eligible population employed or looking for a job. Another alarming truth is that in India, 15% of working women are not paid at all, while this figure is only 4% for men.

According to the NFHS survey, the percentage of working women who are not paid at all for their employment is highest (22%) among women aged 15 to 19 but drops to 13-17% among women aged 25 and over.

According to some statistics, women are paid less and are less likely to receive a raise or promotion than males. According to a Linkedin analysis, among Asian Pacific countries, Indian women encounter the most gender prejudices, with a regional average of 60%.
