News Synopsis

America-based Social Media Giant- Meta Incorporation, formerly known as Facebook has informed that it has limited the access of Russian associated accounts in the War affected Ukraine. The social media company said it is also currently considering other governments’ requests to limit the access of these accounts in their respective countries. Meta’s recently appointed Vice-President of Global affairs, Nick Clegg said that they are maintaining regular communication with the Ukrainian Government. He in a statement said: "At their request, we have also restricted access to several accounts in Ukraine, including those belonging to some Russian state media organisations. We are also reviewing other government requests to restrict Russian state controlled media. The Ukrainians have also suggested that Meta remove access to Facebook and Instagram in Russia. However, people in Russia are using FB and IG to protest and organise against the war and as a source of independent information. The Russian government is already throttling our platform to prevent these activities. We believe turning off our services would silence important expression at a crucial time." The social networking company last weekend restricted many state-backed Russian accounts to run their ads on its platforms. It has also set up special operations center with experts from around the globe to monitor the activities on the platform and tackle any issue as soon as possible.
