News Synopsis

As the G20 Summit approaches, Delhi is undergoing a comprehensive transformation, both in aesthetics and infrastructure, to ensure an impressive welcome for international dignitaries.

With a series of significant G20 gatherings lined up, Delhi is not only upgrading its appearance but also enhancing its functionality to create a memorable experience for attendees.

Delhi's G20 Journey

Delhi's journey to hosting the G20 Summit commenced with a series of crucial events, including the assembly of G20 foreign ministers in March. This momentum is building towards the pinnacle event—the summit of government and state leaders on September 9 and 10.

In preparation for this historic occasion, Delhi is undergoing remarkable changes that blend aesthetics with improved infrastructure.

Roads Upgrade for International Dignitaries

A major focus of the preparations involves improving Delhi's roads to ensure a seamless commuting experience for international dignitaries. The collaborative efforts of the Centre and Delhi government are directed towards providing well-maintained roads that reflect the city's commitment to hosting significant global events.

Additionally, infrastructure upgrades are in progress to elevate the city's overall appearance in line with the summit's grandeur.

Beautification around Pragati Maidan

A notable initiative is the makeover of a 5.8-km stretch around Pragati Maidan, the venue for the G20 summit. This project, sanctioned at Rs 17.5 crore, includes the beautification and reinforcement of Mathura Road, Bhairon Marg, and Ring Road surrounding the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) complex. The transformation aims to present a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere to dignitaries and participants.

Revamped ITPO Complex: A State-of-the-Art Venue

The Integrated Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) within the Pragati Maidan redevelopment project serves as a modern venue for the G20 summit.

Covering approximately 123 acres, this state-of-the-art complex was completed at a cost of Rs 2,254 crore. It boasts a seating capacity of 7,000 and features a magnificent amphitheater with a capacity of 3,000, enhancing the cultural and entertainment experience.

NHAI's Aesthetic Enhancement

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has contributed to Delhi's aesthetic transformation through a beautification project on the Dhaula Kuan-IGI Airport stretch. This 8-km stretch, completed at Rs 22 crore, now boasts sculptures, fountains, and lush greenery, elevating the overall ambiance. Notably, the area features thirty jet fountains between Dhaula Kuan roundabout and the NHAI wall.

Enhancing Metro Stations and Connectivity

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been a key player in the preparations, revamping several metro stations ahead of the G20 Summit. Stations such as Indraprastha, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat have undergone facade beautification and fresh coats of paint. The Airport Express Line pillars have been adorned with artwork, enhancing the delegates' route.

Challenges and Continued Efforts

Despite exceptional efforts, two major connectivity projects—an underpass at Bhairon Marg and a half flyover at Sarai Kale Khan T-junction—experienced delays due to unforeseen heavy rains. These projects, crucial for smoother travel routes for international dignitaries, are undergoing rapid completion to minimize any adverse impact on their journeys.

A Packed Schedule of Events

Delhi's role in hosting G20 events is extensive, including the Parliament-20 summit, Sherpa meetings, and Finance and Energy Deputies gatherings. These events culminate in the joint assembly of Finance and Energy Ministers on September 8, highlighting the importance of the G20 Summit and India's preparedness to host it.

Some latest facts about the G20 Summit preparations in Delhi:
