News Synopsis

The Supreme Court on Friday extended the deadline for the technical and supervisory committees constituted by the supreme court to deliver their findings on the Pegasus controversy, stating 29 compromised mobile phones are being inspected for spyware and the procedure should be completed in four weeks.

The technical committee has been analysing mobile phones for spyware, according to a bench led by Chief Justice N V Ramana, and has also recorded comments from people including journalists and activists.

The standard operating procedure for testing the 'infected devices' will also be finalised, according to the statement, which also stated that the technical committee's investigation could be completed by the end of May and that the supervisory judge would then prepare a report for the bench's review.

In response to the receipt of an interim report, the bench, which also included justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli, stated that the technical committee, which had received 29 mobile phones for the purpose of examining the spyware, had developed software for this purpose and had issued notices to various government agencies and individuals, including journalists. It pleaded for more time to complete its report. It is currently being processed. It stated, "We will give them time."
