News Synopsis

European researchers, a few days back announced that they have set a new Nuclear Fusion Energy World Record. In Oxfordshire, the United Kingdom, a device called Tokamak has produced the highest sustained nuclear energy in history. Rafael Juárez Mañas, an engineering professor at the National Distance Education University in Madrid said the device produced 59 Megajoules of fusion energy. It sustained for five seconds. However, one thing that disappointed the researchers is that they were not able to produce more energy than they utilized in creating this energy. According to Tony Donné, physicist and program manager of the EURO fusion consortium said this is an important achievement. This will further pave the way to generate sustained nuclear energy in the coming future. He said: “If we can maintain fusion for five seconds, we can do it for five minutes and then five hours as we scale up our operations in future machines”.
