News Synopsis

India is advancing with its plans to increase its green energy production and reduce its dependency on non-renewable energy resources such as thermal power derived from burning coal. Given this India has decided to install new solar powerplants across the length and the breadth of the country to enhance its clean energy capacity in near future.  This is an important step towards a more sustainable future. Another noteworthy fact in this news is that India wants to accomplish this without any help from its neighbor- China, which currently dominates the solar power equipment industry. Currently, nearly 80% of solar power equipments are imported from China. Alternative solutions are being considered to replace China as the major supplier of India’s solar power requirements. A couple of measures announced in the recent Union Budget will help the government to some extent to reduce their reliance on China and also to promote its made-in-India campaign that could prove to be an effective indigenous solution.
