News Synopsis

Lately, the state of Andhra Pradesh is suffering from severe power outages. This eventually has tremendously affected people from all walks of life. Darkness has engulfed homes around the state, Government hospitals operations have been disrupted, and Industries have come to a halt because of these power outages. Recently an incident surfaced in which a woman delivered a baby under a smartphone light at a government hospital in Narsipatnam and the visuals of patients having a tough time at many other state-run hospitals due to power outages show the severity of the power outage situation.

The situation in the state has worsened because of the huge gap between demand and supply. This has affected nearly every sector in the states from domestic to agriculture and industry. Amid this turmoil, power distributing companies  (DISCOMs) have turned to Emergency Load Relief (ELR) as they are reporting a power deficit of around 40-50 Million Units (MU) per day. Officially power cuts are for one hour for the domestic sector in villages and half an hour in cities and towns. However, this is far away from reality. The residents of the state have been complaining for several hours of power outages.
