MSDE Celebrates 12 Years of Skill India, Showcases Expansion of Training and Digital Skilling Ecosystem

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has marked 12 years of the Skill India Mission by highlighting the significant expansion of the country's skilling ecosystem. Over the past decade,

India has strengthened its vocational training infrastructure, broadened apprenticeship opportunities, accelerated digital skilling initiatives, and enhanced international workforce mobility programmes aimed at preparing citizens for a rapidly evolving job market.

The ministry stated that the country's skill development framework has evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem that combines vocational education, industry-aligned training, entrepreneurship promotion, digital public infrastructure, and global employment opportunities.

As India continues its journey toward becoming one of the world's largest skilled workforce hubs, the government is increasingly focusing on future-ready skills, technology-driven learning, and stronger industry partnerships.

Expansion of Vocational Training Infrastructure

One of the most notable achievements highlighted by the ministry is the substantial growth in vocational training institutions across the country.

According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) , the number of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) has increased from 9,776 in 2014 to more than 13,888 today. This expansion has significantly improved access to technical and vocational education, particularly in smaller towns and underserved regions.

Wider Access Through Multiple Training Platforms

In addition to ITIs, the government has expanded the reach of skill development through:

The platform currently offers over 1,000 courses in 23 languages, helping make skill development more accessible and inclusive.

AI-Focused Learning Gains Traction

The ministry also highlighted the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) programme, which has recorded over 4.5 lakh enrolments across more than 50 artificial intelligence-related courses and qualifications.

India's Global Skills Competitiveness Improves

India has also strengthened its position on the global skills stage.

According to the ministry, the country's ranking at WorldSkills competitions improved significantly from 29th in 2015 to 13th in 2024.

The achievement is viewed as a strong indicator of India's growing competitiveness in advanced technical and vocational skills.

Recognising the growing demand for skilled workers globally, the ministry has expanded efforts to facilitate overseas employment opportunities.

Building Pathways for Global Careers

MSDE reported progress through:

• Government-to-government workforce partnerships

• Skill-based mobility agreements

• Establishment of 30 Skill India International Centres

These initiatives are designed to help skilled Indian workers access employment opportunities in international markets while ensuring recognition of their skills and qualifications.

Future Reforms Focus on Emerging Technologies

Looking ahead, the ministry plans to strengthen India's skilling ecosystem through several reform initiatives.

These include:

• Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU)
