News Synopsis

The "Seeds for the Future" programme from Huawei Technologies in Brunei, which aims to develop local information and communications technology (ICT) talent, was formally launched on Monday.

"Seeds for the Future," the flagship worldwide CSR initiative of Chinese tech giant Huawei, was first launched in 2008 with the goals of fostering international understanding and local ICT talent development.

According to Zhang Jianwei, CEO of Huawei Technologies in Brunei, "By the end of 2021, this program has been implemented across 137 countries and regions, covering 12,000 students from over 500 universities,"

"This is the 8th session since the programme was held back in 2015 in Brunei. It is also the third year we are conducting online training since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020," the official said.

Zhang claims that a total of 55 local students from the University of Brunei Darussalam, Brunei Technological University, Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, as well as five other schools, participated in the "Seeds for the Future" 2022 online training programme.

According to Zhang, programme participants would be exposed to cutting-edge ICT training from Huawei. This year's programme will present and explore subjects including the metaverse and digital power.

"Over the past few years, we have continued our 'Seeds for the Future' program and we are pleased to witness fruitful results," Zhang added.

"More than 100 students in Brunei benefited from this program from 2015 to 2021, with some graduate students working in the ICT industry, which will contribute to local ICT talent ecosystem development."

More than 100 students and guests from educational institutions, the ICT industry, and government-affiliated businesses attended the event, along with Counsellor Wang Haitao, deputy chief of mission at the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, and Haji Azman, the permanent secretary of the country of Brunei's Ministry of Education.
