Uber Launches India's First Water Transport Service with Shikara Bookings

Uber has ventured into water transportation in India with the launch of Uber Shikara, allowing users to book shikara rides on Srinagar’s Dal Lake via its app. This initiative marks Uber's first water transport service in India and Asia, combining technology with tradition to enhance tourist experiences in Kashmir’s scenic environment.

  • Available for booking from Shikara Ghat No. 16 on Dal Lake.

  • Operates between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Each ride lasts 1 hour, accommodates up to 4 passengers, and can be booked 12 hours to 15 days in advance.

  • Rides are priced at government-determined rates with no commission charged by Uber, ensuring all earnings go directly to shikara operators.

Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, highlighted the positive impact on local operators:
