NHAI Ends KYV for FASTag — Toll Payments Now Easier
News Synopsis
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a major relief for vehicle owners. The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process linked to FASTag will no longer be required for cars, jeeps and vans — reducing paperwork and eliminating repeated bank follow-ups.
NHAI Ends KYV Hassle for FASTag Users
For motorists traveling on national highways, the government has taken an important and relief-oriented decision. NHAI has announced the removal of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag issued to cars, jeeps, and vans.
The objective is to simplify FASTag usage and reduce unnecessary complications for vehicle owners.
Earlier, even after FASTag activation, users were repeatedly asked for document verification and bank follow-ups. In many cases, FASTag was blocked despite valid documents, causing inconvenience at toll plazas. Considering these issues, NHAI has implemented this major reform so users don’t have to undergo repeated verification.
New Rule Effective From February 1, 2026
According to NHAI, the new rule will apply to all FASTag issued on or after February 1, 2026. For cars, jeeps, and vans — KYV will no longer be required after FASTag activation, enabling seamless toll payment without additional procedures.
Relief for Existing FASTag Users Too
This relief isn’t limited to new FASTag users. For previously issued FASTag in the car category, KYV will no longer be routinely mandatory.
Verification will only take place in special cases, such as:
-
Wrong vehicle category tagged
-
Misuse of FASTag
-
Technical discrepancies
If there are no issues, existing users will not be subjected to extra verification.
Banks Will Bear More Responsibility
With KYV being removed, NHAI has increased accountability for banks issuing FASTag. Before activation, banks must verify all vehicle details through the VAHAN government database. FASTag will only be activated when the data matches correctly.
If information is unavailable in the VAHAN database, verification may be done using the Registration Certificate (RC) — and the bank will be fully responsible. This applies to both online and offline FASTag purchases.
Making the FASTag System More User-Friendly
NHAI says these changes aim to make the FASTag ecosystem more:
-
Citizen-friendly
-
Transparent
-
Technology-driven
By shifting verification responsibility to banks, users will face fewer issues after activation, reducing complaints and improving traffic flow at toll plazas.
The government believes this reform strengthens digital governance and prioritizes user convenience. More such improvements are expected in the future, making highway travel smoother and more reliable.
