Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Girish Chandra Murmu, has achieved a significant milestone by being overwhelmingly re-elected as the external auditor of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for a four-year term from 2024 to 2027. This remarkable accomplishment further solidifies CAG's prominent role in global healthcare auditing.

Recognizing CAG's Exceptional Credentials and Global Audit Experience

In a statement released in New Delhi, the CAG expressed gratitude for the resounding victory during the election held on May 29, 2023, at the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva. With an impressive majority of 114 out of 156 votes in the first round itself, CAG Girish Murmu's re-election showcases the international community's recognition of India's Comptroller and Auditor General, highlighting the professionalism, high standards, and global audit experience demonstrated by the office.

Tanzania received 42 votes, while a minimum of 79 votes was required for a majority. The CAG's re-election as the external auditor of WHO signifies the confidence placed in the office's capabilities, as well as its unwavering commitment to upholding transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the auditing process.

The CAG attributed this remarkable achievement to the sustained support and tireless efforts of the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in Geneva, along with dedicated officers and a handpicked team from the Comptroller and Auditor General's office. The collaborative efforts contributed to securing the overwhelming support of member states, affirming CAG's esteemed position in international healthcare auditing.

During the World Health Assembly meeting, CAG Girish Murmu outlined his vision as the external auditor of WHO. He emphasized the importance of process improvement to achieve better outcomes, emphasized the significance of transparency, and stressed the need for a professional approach in the auditing domain.

The Permanent Mission of India in Geneva took to Twitter to congratulate CAG Girish Murmu, stating, "Congratulations, CAG, India! World Health Assembly re-elects Comptroller and Auditor General of India Shri Girish Chandra Murmu as the External Auditor of @WHO for 2024-27. 114 Member States out of 156 States present and voting reposed their trust in CAG, India."

This re-election as the external auditor of WHO marks the second major international audit assignment for CAG Girish Murmu this year. Previously, he was selected for the post of external auditor (2024-2027) of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva in March 2023.
