Toyota Unveils Urban Cruiser EV with AWD, Trail Mode, and Dual Battery Options

Toyota has officially unveiled the Urban Cruiser EV, an electric SUV based on the Suzuki e-Vitara. The model is set to launch in Europe in 2025, with an expected arrival in India shortly after. The Urban Cruiser EV offers two battery options, advanced technology, and enhanced features that position it as a competitive electric vehicle in its segment.

Design and Styling: A Blend of Familiarity and Innovation

The Urban Cruiser EV features a design that incorporates Toyota's current styling trends. The front fascia is distinguishable with sleek headlamps and a grille-separated bonnet, resembling elements of the ninth-generation Camry. The SUV also showcases a central air vent integrated into a minimalist bumper, which enhances its modern aesthetic.

The side profile of the Urban Cruiser EV retains the design of the Suzuki e-Vitara, including squared-off wheel arches, robust side cladding, and consistent window lines. A charging port is positioned on the front fender, mirroring the Suzuki model.

At the rear, Toyota has made subtle adjustments to differentiate the Urban Cruiser EV from the e-Vitara. The SUV features lightbar-style tail lamps and a roof spoiler, along with a chunky bumper. While the rear design is similar to the Suzuki e-Vitara, Toyota’s internal tail lamp details give it a unique touch.

Flexible Cabin and Comfort Features

Inside, the Urban Cruiser EV boasts a flexible cabin with adjustable rear seating. The 40:20:40 split configuration allows for better luggage storage, while the sliding functionality and reclining rear seats offer added comfort for passengers. This design ensures both practicality and versatility in accommodating different passenger and cargo needs.

Powertrain and Battery Options: Performance for Every Need

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will be available with two battery options. The entry-level variant comes with a 49kWh battery, paired with a 144hp motor that drives the front wheels. A more powerful 61kWh battery will be available in higher variants, supporting both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The larger battery variant is equipped with enhanced off-road capabilities, including a second motor on the rear axle to increase power output to 184hp and 300Nm of torque.

AWD and Off-Road Features: Ready for Adventure

The all-wheel-drive (AWD) version of the Urban Cruiser EV is designed for off-road enthusiasts. In addition to the power boost from the second motor, the AWD variant comes with advanced features such as hill descent control and a Trail Mode. This mode is specifically designed to provide better traction on uneven terrain, enhancing the vehicle's off-road performance.

Technology and Safety: Advanced Features for Convenience and Security

The Urban Cruiser EV comes with an array of technology and safety features. It includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims also offer a JBL sound system, wireless phone charging, and automatic climate control.

Safety features include a 360-degree camera and Toyota's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which provides adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a pre-collision system for added security on the road.

Dimensions, Production, and Market Launch

The production version of the Urban Cruiser EV measures 4,285mm in length, making it slightly larger than the Suzuki e-Vitara. Built on a shared platform with the Suzuki model, the SUV will be manufactured at Suzuki's Gujarat facility in India. It offers a turning radius of 5.2 meters, making it suitable for urban environments.

Toyota plans to showcase the Urban Cruiser EV at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2025. The pricing details for the UK market will be announced in the third quarter of 2025, with the Indian market launch expected toward the end of the year.
