News Synopsis

Tesla has expanded its Model Y line-up in China with the launch of a new long-wheelbase 6-seater variant called the Model Y L, priced at 339,000 yuan (approx. ₹41.17 lakh). This refreshed version is aimed at boosting Tesla’s presence in the highly competitive Chinese EV market, where domestic players like BYD, Nio, and Li Auto have intensified the battle.

First introduced in 2020, the Tesla Model Y became the world’s best-selling car in 2023. However, with slowing sales in China and cooling EV demand globally, Tesla is looking to regain market momentum through enhanced comfort, space, and premium features.

Key Highlights of Tesla Model Y L

6-Seater Spacious Configuration

The Model Y L features a 2+2+2 seating layout, replacing the standard rear bench with captain seats in the second row. These seats come with heating, ventilation, power armrests, and enhanced comfort. The third row also includes heating functionality, making the SUV more appealing to family buyers in China.

Extended Dimensions for More Comfort

Tesla has stretched the wheelbase by 150mm and the overall length by 179mm, significantly increasing interior space. This makes the Model Y L more practical for larger families while maintaining its sporty crossover appeal.

Refreshed Design and Exterior Upgrades

The exterior design gets subtle yet noticeable updates, including:

  • Redesigned 19-inch alloy wheels for better aerodynamics.

  • Longer roofline with a larger quarter glass area.

  • Blacked-out rear spoiler for a sportier stance.

  • A new Starlight Gold paint option.

  • A quirky new ‘Model YYY’ badge to differentiate it from the standard Model Y.

Tesla Model Y L Advanced Features and Technology

Upgraded Infotainment and Connectivity

The Tesla Model Y L features a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, slightly bigger than the standard version. It also gets an 18-speaker sound system (+4 speakers over the regular variant) for an immersive audio experience.

Comfort-Focused Cabin Enhancements

Rear passengers benefit from pillar-mounted air vents, improving airflow for second and third-row occupants. Combined with the premium seat upgrades, Tesla is clearly targeting families seeking luxury-level comfort in an electric SUV.

Tesla Model Y Battery, Motor, and Performance

Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive

The Model Y L is available exclusively in Long Range AWD configuration. It uses:

  • 193 bhp motor at the front

  • 269 bhp motor at the rear

  • 82kWh battery pack

Impressive Speed and Range

Despite weighing 96kg more than the standard Model Y, the new Model Y L maintains strong performance:

  • 0–100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds

  • Top speed electronically limited

  • 751km CLTC-rated range, slightly higher than the standard Model Y

Tesla attributes this improved efficiency to aerodynamic refinements and the redesigned wheels.

Market Strategy: Why China First?

China is the world’s largest EV market, and Tesla faces increasing competition from domestic automakers like BYD, Li Auto, and XPeng. The Model Y L’s focus on comfort, premium features, and space directly appeals to Chinese families who prefer larger SUVs.

As of now, Tesla has not confirmed whether the Model Y L will be sold in other international markets.
