News Synopsis

Tesla has officially begun its journey in India with the delivery of its first Model Y electric SUV. The milestone was marked at the brand-new Tesla Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik received the car. This marks not only Tesla’s entry into India’s premium EV market but also highlights the state’s push for sustainable mobility.

Tesla’s First Delivery in India

The Tesla Model Y delivery was conducted at Tesla’s maiden showroom in Mumbai, inaugurated in July. The electric SUV handed over to Pratap Sarnaik symbolizes the brand’s long-awaited entry into India’s EV space. Tesla staff at the event showcased the company’s cutting-edge technology, highlighting features like sustainable powertrains and smart connectivity.

Minister’s Symbolic Purchase

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik expressed that his Tesla purchase was more than just personal luxury—it was symbolic of the state’s commitment to clean mobility. He mentioned that the car would be gifted to his grandson to build awareness of sustainable transport among the younger generation.

He also reiterated the state’s target of achieving large-scale EV adoption over the next decade. Maharashtra, aligned with the Prime Minister’s clean mobility mission, has already rolled out a series of incentives to encourage EV use.

Maharashtra’s Push for EV Adoption

Sarnaik highlighted several initiatives undertaken by the Maharashtra government to accelerate the electric vehicle transition:

  • Toll exemptions for EVs on the Atal Setu and the Samruddhi Expressway.

  • Induction of nearly 5,000 electric buses by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

  • Subsidies and policy incentives to promote private EV adoption.

He emphasized that while EVs may currently cost more than conventional cars, their long-term environmental benefits and role in setting the right example make them worth the investment.

Tesla’s Retail Expansion in India

The BKC showroom is Tesla’s first official retail and experience centre in India. The company has also opened another outlet at Delhi’s Aerocity, expanding its presence in two major urban hubs. These showrooms aim to educate Indian buyers about Tesla’s EV technology, performance, and charging infrastructure.
