News Synopsis

India celebrated Mother’s Day 2025 with a surge in food delivery orders, particularly for cakes, as families came together to honor mothers with delicious treats. According to Swiggy, over 3 lakh cakes were delivered on the special day — a significant rise from 2.33 lakh cakes delivered in 2024.

Cake Orders Peak at 7:43 PM

Swiggy recorded its highest ordering activity at 7:43 PM, when cake orders peaked at 620 per minute. In the 7 PM hour alone, more than 30,000 cakes were delivered, reflecting the growing trend of celebrating occasions with on-demand delivery services.

Major Metro Cities Dominate Cake Orders

Leading metro cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata saw the highest number of cake orders. Mumbai stood out not just in volume but also in value—hosting the highest individual cake order, totaling ₹9,426.

Tier-II and Tier-III Cities See Rapid Growth

Interestingly, the demand for cakes wasn’t limited to metros. Cities like Nellore, Ujjain, Srinagar, Hanumangarh, Bhilwara, and Kurukshetra saw a significant uptick in cake orders. Smaller towns such as Muzaffarpur, Jalandhar, and Gorakhpur recorded the fastest growth, showing how Swiggy's delivery network is expanding in India’s non-metro regions.

Express Delivery Usage Surges by 181%

Swiggy’s express delivery service saw a 181% rise compared to the previous Sunday. Nearly 32,000 cakes were delivered using the platform’s quick-delivery option, emphasizing the increasing preference for speed and convenience, especially on special occasions.

Popular Dishes Beyond Cakes

While cakes led the celebration, chicken biryani and vegetable dosa also emerged as top choices for Mother’s Day meals. The largest single order, valued at ₹12,585, featured multiple biryani buckets, indicating large-scale family celebrations and shared meals.

Dining Out Trends Up by 35%

Apart from home deliveries, restaurant dining also saw significant traction. Table bookings on Mother’s Day rose by 35% compared to a typical Sunday. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai witnessed steady growth, while Tier-II cities such as Vadodara, Dehradun, Lucknow, and Nagpur experienced up to 70% higher bookings.

Rise in Group Bookings

A notable increase in table bookings for groups of 6 to 10 people was also reported, reflecting the trend of extended family gatherings on Mother’s Day. These larger bookings highlight the social aspect of dining and the importance of in-person celebrations for special occasions.
