Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on November 18, 2024, marking the second stop of his three-nation visit. His visit to Brazil is focused on attending the 19th G20 Summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19.

Productive Visit to Nigeria Preceded Brazil Trip

Before heading to Brazil, PM Modi concluded a "productive" visit to Nigeria, where he engaged in bilateral talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Modi also interacted with the Indian community in Nigeria, strengthening the ties between the two nations. The visit to Nigeria was significant, as it marked Modi's first trip to the country in 17 years.

Welcome in Brazil and Anticipation for G20 Summit

Upon his arrival in Brazil, Modi was welcomed with great enthusiasm. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted about his arrival on the social media platform X, sharing images of the warm reception at the Rio de Janeiro airport. In a message on his official X handle, Modi expressed his eagerness to participate in the G20 Summit. He wrote, "Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders."

India’s Role in the G20 Troika

PM Modi will attend the summit as a member of the G20 Troika, alongside Brazil and South Africa. As part of the Troika, India plays a critical role in shaping discussions at the summit, which will include key global issues. Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden will also be among the leaders attending, making this summit an important platform for international dialogue.

Upcoming Visit to Guyana: A Historic First

After attending the G20 Summit in Brazil, Modi will visit Guyana from November 19 to 21, at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in more than 50 years. Modi’s visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its ties with countries in the Caribbean.

Key Highlights of Modi's G20 Presidency

PM Modi’s visit to Brazil comes after a year of significant achievements during India's G20 presidency in 2023. The induction of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 and the successful creation of a leaders' declaration overcoming divisions over the Ukraine conflict were some of the major milestones of India's leadership.

PM Modi Conferred with Nigeria’s Highest Honor

During his stay in Nigeria, Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s highest national award. He is only the second foreign dignitary to receive this distinction, with Queen Elizabeth II being the only other foreign recipient. This recognition highlights the deepening relations between India and Nigeria.

Strengthening Global Relations

This visit continues Modi’s focus on global engagement, with the G20 Summit serving as an important venue for discussions on crucial issues such as climate change, global trade, and geopolitical tensions. Modi’s diplomatic visits are further strengthening India's position as a key player on the global stage.
