News Synopsis

Google takes a firm stance on app policy violations, banning over 2 million apps from its Play Store in 2023. Explore its proactive measures to safeguard user privacy and enhance security

Google's App Ban for Policy Violations:

Google has banned over 2 million apps from its Play Store due to policy violations, according to the latest data shared by the company. These apps were prevented from being published on the Play Store in 2023.

Action Against Policy Violators:

In addition to banning apps, Google also banned 333,000 bad accounts from the Play Store. The bans were imposed for violations such as confirmed malware and repeated severe policy breaches, often perpetrated by criminals and fraud rings.

Rejection of App Submissions:

Almost 200,000 app submissions were rejected or remediated by Google to ensure proper use of sensitive permissions, such as background location or SMS access.

Partnership for Privacy Enhancement:

Google collaborated with SDK providers to limit sensitive data access and sharing, thereby enhancing privacy for over 31 SDKs impacting over 790,000 apps. This initiative aimed to safeguard user privacy at scale.

Strengthening Security Measures:

Google enhanced Google Play Protect’s security capabilities with real-time scanning at the code level to combat novel malicious apps. This approach involves learning from each app submitted to Google for review and analyzing thousands of signals to assess app behavior.

Detection of Malicious Off-Play Apps:

The new security capability has detected over 5 million new malicious off-Play apps, contributing to the protection of Android users globally.

Focus on Privacy Control:

To empower users with more control over their personal data, apps enabling account creation now need to offer an option for initiating account and data deletion from within the app and online.

Future Feature Development:

Google is developing a new feature to assist users in isolating malicious apps on their smartphones once detected.

Similar to antivirus programs on Windows, Android 15 will be capable of 'quarantining' apps, limiting their capabilities and preventing adverse actions on the user's device.

Android 15 Beta:

The latest Android 15 beta includes the ability for system apps like Google Play Services or the Play Store to isolate apps and apply restrictions on them, effectively quarantining the app to protect the user's device.

Commitment to User Protection:

Google's initiatives underscore its commitment to protecting users from malicious apps and enhancing privacy control measures within the Android ecosystem.
