News Synopsis

OpenAI has quietly rolled out a new translation tool called ChatGPT Translate, offering users an alternative to Google Translate. Without any official announcement, the American AI company has introduced a dedicated translation interface on the ChatGPT website, adding AI-powered refinement features to standard text translation.

ChatGPT Translate Goes Live Without Official Announcement

For years, millions of users in India and around the world have relied on Google Translate for language translation. Now, they have a new option. OpenAI has made ChatGPT Translate live without releasing any official blog post or social media announcement.

The new translation interface is available on a separate web page within the ChatGPT website and visually resembles Google Translate at first glance.

How the ChatGPT Translate Interface Works

Users can either type text directly into the translation box or copy and paste content from other websites. While it appears to be a simple translation tool initially, the key difference emerges after the translation is generated.

Once the text is translated, users can refine and rewrite the output in different styles and tones, showcasing the underlying AI capabilities that go beyond basic word-for-word translation.

First Spotted on X (Formerly Twitter)

The new “Translate with ChatGPT” feature was first noticed by Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIRPM, who shared details on X (formerly Twitter).

Notably, OpenAI has not acknowledged the feature publicly. There has been no mention of it from the company’s official channels or employees so far.

Currently, the feature is available only on web browsers, with no separate interface visible for the ChatGPT mobile app.

Supported Languages and Interface Layout

The translation page features two large text boxes:

  • The left box allows users to input text and is set to “Detect language” by default

  • The right box displays the translated content, with a drop-down menu to select the target language

At present, the number of supported languages is limited.

ChatGPT Translate Supports Around 50 Languages

OpenAI currently supports approximately 50 languages in ChatGPT Translate. Major languages include:

  • English

  • French

  • German

  • Hindi

  • Spanish

  • Japanese

  • Korean

The tool also supports several Indian languages, such as Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Image and Voice Translation Still in Development

The website states that users can translate content via text, image, or voice input. However:

  • There is no visible option to upload images at the moment

  • Voice translation works only on mobile browsers when microphone access is enabled

These features are believed to be under development and may be expanded in future updates.

ChatGPT Translate vs Google Translate

In its current form, ChatGPT Translate closely resembles Google Translate but remains limited in scope. While Google Translate supports around 243 languages and offers features like:

  • Image and document translation

  • Camera-based translation

  • Real-time conversation mode

ChatGPT Translate is still fairly basic. However, its ability to edit translated text based on style and tone gives it a unique AI-driven edge that sets it apart.
