Maruti Suzuki Projects India’s Passenger Vehicle Market to Reach 6.3 Million Units by FY31
India’s Passenger Vehicle Market Expected to Expand
Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, expects the domestic passenger vehicle market to grow significantly over the next five years.
The automaker estimates that the Indian passenger vehicle market could reach between 6.1 million and 6.3 million units by financial year 2030-31. Chairman R.C. Bhargava said the expansion could be supported by a recovery in demand for small cars and continued momentum in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment.
The projection reflects the company's expectations of stronger overall demand for personal mobility in India.
Small Cars Could See Stronger Growth
Maruti Suzuki is reviewing its medium-term growth strategy as it expects the small-car segment to perform better than it has during the previous five years.
The company believes renewed demand for compact and affordable vehicles could become an important driver of future passenger vehicle sales. Small cars have traditionally played a major role in India's automobile market because of their affordability and suitability for first-time buyers.
A revival in this category could provide Maruti with an additional growth opportunity alongside its expanding SUV portfolio.
Maruti Records Strong Sales in FY26
Maruti Suzuki reported record vehicle sales in financial year 2025-26. The company sold approximately 2.42 million vehicles during the year, while exports reached an all-time high of around 447,000 units.
Strong sales performance has also improved the company's expectations for reaching its next million-unit sales milestone. Maruti believes it could achieve this target earlier than previously anticipated.
The company's performance highlights its continued dominance in India's passenger vehicle market while also reflecting growing demand from overseas markets.
₹35,000 Crore Investment Planned for Capacity Expansion
To support future growth, Maruti Suzuki plans to invest approximately ₹35,000 crore, equivalent to around $4 billion, over the coming years.
The investment is expected to increase the company's annual production capacity to approximately 3.65 million vehicles by FY31.
Maruti has also accelerated its manufacturing expansion by adding around 500,000 units of capacity during FY27. The additional capacity is intended to help the company meet rising domestic and international demand.
Seven New SUVs Planned
SUVs remain a major focus of Maruti Suzuki's future product strategy.
Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company plans to introduce seven new SUV models over the next five to six years. The launches are aimed at strengthening Maruti's position in one of India's fastest-growing passenger vehicle categories.
The company's expanded SUV portfolio could help it capture a larger share of customers moving toward larger vehicles while maintaining its traditional presence in the small-car segment.
Maruti Expands Clean-Energy Initiatives
Alongside manufacturing expansion, Maruti Suzuki is also increasing its focus on alternative energy solutions.
The company's board has approved an initial investment of ₹561 crore to establish four biogas plants. The initiative forms part of Maruti's broader clean-energy strategy.
Chairman R.C. Bhargava said biogas could help reduce dependence on imported compressed natural gas while supporting India's long-term net-zero objectives.
The initiative reflects the company's efforts to explore alternative energy sources as the automobile industry moves toward more sustainable production and mobility solutions.
Focus on Localisation and Supply-Chain Resilience
Maruti Suzuki is also strengthening its supply chain by increasing localisation, developing alternative sourcing options and improving supplier capabilities.
These measures are designed to reduce the impact of geopolitical uncertainties and disruptions in global supply chains. Greater localisation could also help the company manage costs and improve the availability of critical components.
The strategy is becoming increasingly important for automakers as international trade conditions and semiconductor and component supply chains continue to evolve.
Closer Integration With Suzuki Motor Corporation
Maruti Suzuki said its relationship with its parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, has become closer and more integrated.
The company expects this stronger collaboration to support faster vehicle development and help reduce costs. Greater coordination between the two companies could also improve the efficiency of product planning, engineering and manufacturing operations.
Outlook for Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki's growth strategy combines capacity expansion, new SUV launches, a potential recovery in small-car demand, stronger exports and investments in clean energy.
With the Indian passenger vehicle market potentially reaching 6.1 million to 6.3 million units by FY31, the company is positioning itself for another phase of expansion.
The planned ₹35,000 crore investment and increased production capacity indicate that Maruti expects demand to remain strong over the medium term. At the same time, its focus on localisation, alternative energy and closer integration with Suzuki could help strengthen its competitiveness in India's evolving automobile market.
