News Synopsis
The BCCI has shifted India's opening ODI against Sri Lanka from Delhi to Visakhapatnam on December 13, citing weather-related concerns and proposed renovation work at the stadium.
India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Shifted From Delhi to Visakhapatnam Over Weather, Renovation Concerns
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a venue change for the opening ODI between India and Sri Lanka scheduled for December 13. The match, originally planned at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, will now take place at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
The decision follows a request from the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), which raised concerns about possible weather disruptions and renovation work planned at the Delhi venue.
BCCI Announces Change in Venue for India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI
The BCCI confirmed on Thursday that the first ODI of India's upcoming series against Sri Lanka has been relocated from Delhi to Visakhapatnam.
According to the board, the DDCA requested the change, pointing to potential weather-related challenges and proposed renovation activities at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The match was expected to mark Delhi's return to hosting an ODI for the first time since the 2023 Cricket World Cup. However, the revised schedule means Visakhapatnam will host the series opener instead.
Delhi's Air Pollution Concerns Also Reportedly Influenced Decision
Apart from weather conditions and renovation plans, air pollution in the national capital reportedly played a role in the venue change.
According to Cricbuzz, officials were concerned about the possibility of poor air quality during December and wanted to avoid a repeat of the pollution-related problems witnessed during India's Test against Sri Lanka in 2017.
Delhi has not hosted an international cricket match in December since that encounter. During the 2017 Test, several Sri Lankan players were seen wearing protective masks on the field because of severe air pollution.
Reuters has contacted the DDCA for its response regarding the venue change.
Why Delhi Faces Severe Air Pollution During Winter
Air quality in Delhi and surrounding areas generally deteriorates during the winter months. Cold and dense atmospheric conditions can trap pollutants close to the ground, preventing them from dispersing easily.
Emissions from vehicles, construction activities and crop-residue burning contribute to the pollution problem. As a result, pollution levels can rise sharply, creating health concerns for residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
Diwali celebrations can further affect air quality. Fireworks associated with the festival add to pollution levels, with Diwali falling on November 8 this year.
These seasonal challenges have made air quality an important consideration when planning major outdoor sporting events in the capital.
India vs Sri Lanka December 2026 Tour Schedule
Sri Lanka are scheduled to play a six-match white-ball series in India from December 13 to December 27. The tour will include three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Following the venue revision, Visakhapatnam will host the opening ODI. The remaining two ODI matches are scheduled to take place in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
The three T20 International matches will be played in Rajkot, Cuttack and Pune.
Conclusion
The relocation of the India vs Sri Lanka first ODI highlights the challenges of hosting international cricket in Delhi during winter. With weather conditions, stadium renovation plans and reported air pollution concerns influencing the decision, Visakhapatnam will now host the December 13 series opener.
