India-UAE Bilateral Trade Crosses $100 Billion After CEPA, Says Jaishankar

India-UAE Trade Surpasses $100 Billion Milestone

India’s bilateral trade with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has crossed ₹9.47 lakh crore, equivalent to US$100 billion, since the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar announced on October 20, 2026.

Jaishankar made the remarks while welcoming UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Mumbai. He said the growing trade relationship demonstrates the progress made by both countries in strengthening their economic partnership.

The minister highlighted that India and the UAE are building on more than a decade of engagement, with their relationship developing into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Despite global economic uncertainties and regional challenges, economic cooperation between the two countries continues to advance.

CEPA Strengthens Economic and Business Ties

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement has become an important part of India-UAE economic engagement. The latest trade milestone reflects the expansion of commercial links and the increasing importance of both countries as economic partners.

Jaishankar noted that the relationship continues to deliver on its potential, with businesses on both sides demonstrating confidence in each other’s economies. Growing two-way investments are also strengthening economic ties and creating opportunities for deeper collaboration.

The partnership extends beyond trade in goods and services. Cooperation in defence, energy and technology is gaining strategic importance, while cultural exchanges and people-to-people connections continue to contribute to closer relations.

India and UAE Emphasise Regional Stability

During his remarks, Jaishankar expressed concern about the prevailing situation in the Gulf region. He said India and the UAE would continue working together and support initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and diplomacy.

The minister also reiterated India’s position on maintaining the free, safe and unimpeded movement of trade, energy and fertilisers. These flows are important for economic stability and supply-chain security, particularly amid regional tensions.

His comments underlined the importance of continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries as they work to protect shared economic interests and support stability across the region.

Leadership-Level Engagement Gains Momentum in 2026

Jaishankar described 2026 as a year of particularly intensive engagement between the leaderships of India and the UAE. He recalled several high-level interactions that have helped strengthen bilateral cooperation.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited India in January 2026. The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to maintain momentum in their strategic relationship and discuss areas of mutual interest.

In February, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan participated in the AI Impact Summit and the 18th BRICS Summit. His participation reflected the breadth of engagement between the two countries across diplomatic, economic and emerging-technology platforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited the UAE in May 2026. Jaishankar noted that it was Modi’s eighth visit to the country, highlighting the sustained attention given to bilateral relations at the highest political level.

Indian Community Remains an Important Link

Jaishankar thanked the UAE leadership for supporting the well-being of the Indian community living in the country. The Indian diaspora remains an important bridge between the two nations, contributing to economic activity and strengthening social and cultural connections.

The community’s presence reinforces the close relationship between India and the UAE, alongside trade, investment and strategic cooperation.

Outlook for India-UAE Relations

Crossing the $100 billion bilateral trade milestone marks a significant development in India-UAE economic relations following CEPA. Rising investments, stronger business confidence and expanding cooperation in defence, energy and technology are broadening the partnership.

Continued leadership-level engagement and coordination on regional issues are also expected to remain important elements of the relationship. As both countries deepen their economic and strategic cooperation, their partnership is positioned to play a significant role in regional trade, investment and connectivity.
