India's First Homegrown Semiconductor Chip Set for Production by 2025: Ashwini Vaishnaw
News Synopsis
Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced that India’s first indigenously developed semiconductor chip will be production-ready by 2025. Speaking via video conferencing at the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s rapid progress in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. This development is a crucial milestone in strengthening India’s position as a global leader in technology and innovation.
Madhya Pradesh’s Electronics Manufacturing Boom
Vaishnaw commended the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav for fostering rapid industrial growth in the state. Under PM Modi’s vision, Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a key player in India's electronics sector, with significant investments and government-backed initiatives fueling its expansion.
The state now hosts two approved electronic manufacturing clusters, one in Bhopal and another in Jabalpur. These clusters are expected to drive industrial growth, creating new job opportunities and boosting economic development. Currently, 85 companies are actively involved in electronics manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh, signaling a promising future for the sector.
Skilling India’s Workforce for the Future
Recognizing the importance of a skilled workforce, the government has launched the Future Skills Program, aimed at training 20,000 engineers in advanced semiconductor and electronics technologies. This initiative aligns with India’s broader vision to strengthen its domestic capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor imports.
India’s electronics manufacturing industry has witnessed tremendous growth over the past decade, now valued at ₹10 lakh crore. The country’s electronics exports have surged to ₹5 lakh crore, with mobile phones alone contributing ₹4 lakh crore. Other exports include laptops, servers, telecom equipment, and defense and medical electronics, positioning electronics as one of India’s top three export categories.
Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Capabilities
India’s commitment to semiconductor manufacturing is evident with five semiconductor units currently under construction. The rollout of the first Made in India semiconductor chip in 2025 is expected to revolutionize the domestic industry and reduce dependency on imports. The government has also introduced initiatives to train 85,000 engineers in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, ensuring a highly skilled workforce to support this sector’s growth.
Ashwini Vaishnaw credited PM Modi’s leadership for driving India’s advancements in semiconductor technology. He also congratulated Madhya Pradesh’s leadership for their efforts in boosting the state’s industrial and technological landscape. Additionally, he extended his best wishes to the people of Madhya Pradesh on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Madhya Pradesh’s First IT Campus: A Game-Changer
The state’s electronics sector received a significant boost with the launch of its first IT campus, spanning 1 lakh square feet. This cutting-edge facility will focus on manufacturing IT hardware and electronic products, including servers, desktops, motherboards, RAM, SSDs, drones, and robots.
With a planned investment of ₹150 crore over the next six years, the IT campus is expected to generate employment opportunities for 1,200 professionals. In addition to IT hardware, the facility will manufacture desktop computers, all-in-one workstations, laptops, tablets, and monitors, strengthening India’s electronics ecosystem.
Strengthening Renewable Energy and Infrastructure
On the first day of the Global Investors Summit 2025, Indian Railways and the Madhya Pradesh government signed agreements to develop renewable energy projects. These agreements align with India’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and economic progress.
India’s Vision for Future-Ready Infrastructure
The Modi government remains committed to building future-ready infrastructure and fostering economic growth under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The focus is on four key pillars:
-
Infrastructure Investment – Enhancing transportation, energy, and digital infrastructure.
-
Inclusive Growth – Creating opportunities across all socio-economic sections.
-
Manufacturing Expansion – Strengthening domestic production capabilities.
-
Regulatory Simplification – Streamlining laws to support business and economic development.
