News Synopsis

India’s EV sales climbed 51% year-on-year in August 2026, supported by strong electric car and two-wheeler demand despite a monthly decline caused by holiday-related registrations.

India’s EV Market Records Strong Growth in August

India’s electric vehicle market continued its strong growth trajectory in August 2026, with overall EV sales rising 51% year-on-year.

The increase reflects sustained consumer interest in electric mobility, particularly in the passenger vehicle and electric two-wheeler segments. However, sales were lower than the previous month as vehicle registrations were affected by holidays at regional transport offices during festivals including Onam and Rakshabandhan.

Despite the monthly slowdown, the annual growth indicates that demand for electric vehicles remains strong across the Indian market.

Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Moderate From July

Electric passenger vehicle registrations stood at 29,687 units in August, down from the record 33,746 units registered in July.

The month-on-month decline reflects temporary factors rather than a major change in consumer demand. Holiday closures and reduced registration activity at regional transport offices affected the number of vehicles recorded during the month.

Despite the decline from July’s record level, August registrations remained significantly higher on an annual basis, highlighting the continued expansion of electric cars in India.

Electric Two-Wheeler Market Grows 69%

The electric two-wheeler segment remained one of the biggest contributors to India’s EV growth. Sales across the top five listed electric two-wheeler manufacturers increased 69% year-on-year to around 160,000 units in August.

Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company were among the strongest performers during the month.

Bajaj and TVS Report Strong Annual Growth

Bajaj Auto recorded a remarkable 235% year-on-year increase in electric two-wheeler sales, while TVS Motor Company posted 91% growth.

The strong performance from established manufacturers indicates growing competition in India’s electric two-wheeler market, as traditional automobile companies continue to increase their presence in the EV segment.

However, not every manufacturer recorded growth. Ola Electric’s sales declined 29% year-on-year, highlighting differences in performance among major EV companies.

Monthly EV Two-Wheeler Sales Decline

Despite impressive annual growth, the electric two-wheeler market experienced a short-term slowdown in August.

Sales declined approximately 11% compared with July, while EV penetration in the two-wheeler category eased to 10.7% from 11.2% in the previous month.

Even with this moderation, penetration remained considerably above the level recorded a year earlier. This suggests that the broader transition toward electric two-wheelers continues despite temporary fluctuations in monthly registrations.

Tata Motors Leads Electric Car Market

Tata Motors maintained its position as India’s leading electric passenger vehicle manufacturer in August. The company recorded 12,984 electric passenger vehicle registrations, putting it ahead of its major competitors.

Mahindra & Mahindra ranked second with 6,367 registrations, while JSW MG Motor followed with 4,568 units.

Top Electric Passenger Vehicle Manufacturers

The August registration figures were:

  • Tata Motors: 12,984 units

  • Mahindra & Mahindra: 6,367 units

  • JSW MG Motor: 4,568 units

The figures underline Tata Motors’ continued strength in India’s electric passenger vehicle market, while Mahindra and JSW MG Motor are also expanding their presence.

EV Manufacturers Expand Production Capacity

The strong annual growth in EV demand is encouraging manufacturers to increase production capacity and invest in new facilities.

Several major automobile companies are expanding their manufacturing capabilities to prepare for higher future demand.

Companies including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, JSW MG Motor, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company and Ather Energy are investing in capacity expansion and commissioning new manufacturing facilities.

These investments could help manufacturers meet rising demand while supporting the development of India’s wider EV supply chain.

Temporary Decline Does Not Affect Long-Term EV Momentum

The decline in August registrations compared with July highlights the impact that seasonal and administrative factors can have on monthly sales data.

Festivals and holidays can reduce registration activity, creating temporary fluctuations in reported sales. Therefore, the year-on-year performance provides an important indication of the underlying market trend.

With EV sales still growing strongly compared with the same period last year, electric mobility continues to gain momentum in India.

India’s Electric Mobility Ecosystem Expands

The rising adoption of electric cars and two-wheelers is also supporting growth across India’s broader electric mobility ecosystem.

Increasing investments in manufacturing capacity, new product launches and stronger competition among automakers are creating more choices for consumers.

As manufacturers expand production, the industry could see greater availability of EV models and continued investment in supporting infrastructure and technology.

Outlook for India’s EV Market

The August figures indicate that India’s EV market remains on a strong growth path despite short-term fluctuations.

Electric two-wheelers continue to benefit from increasing consumer adoption, while electric passenger vehicles are also gaining traction. The expansion plans announced by major manufacturers suggest that companies are preparing for sustained demand over the coming years.

Continued investments could further strengthen India’s position as an important market for electric mobility and EV manufacturing.

Conclusion

India’s EV market recorded 51% year-on-year growth in August 2026, driven by strong demand for electric cars and two-wheelers. Although monthly sales declined due to holiday-related registration disruptions, continued annual growth and rising manufacturing investments point to sustained momentum for electric mobility in India.
