News Synopsis

Hyundai Motor India plans to expand annual production capacity to 1.14 million vehicles by 2030 and increase localisation to 92% by 2032, strengthening domestic manufacturing and exports.

Hyundai Motor India Plans Major Capacity Expansion and Higher Localisation by 2032

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is planning a significant expansion of its manufacturing operations, targeting annual production capacity of 1.14 million vehicles by 2030. The automaker also aims to increase component localisation to 92% by 2032, reinforcing its domestic supplier network and manufacturing capabilities.

The strategy comes as India's passenger vehicle market continues to expand and demand shifts towards sport utility vehicles (SUVs), electric vehicles and alternative-fuel options. Hyundai intends to strengthen its position in the domestic market while supporting its export operations through increased capacity and local sourcing.

Hyundai Motor India Production Capacity Target for 2030

HMIL currently has an installed annual production capacity of 9.94 lakh vehicles. Of this, its two manufacturing plants in Chennai account for 8.24 lakh units, serving both Indian customers and international markets.

The planned increase to 1.14 million vehicles annually by 2030 would expand the company's ability to meet future demand. Greater production capacity could also provide additional flexibility as the automaker develops its product portfolio and export business.

Hyundai has sold nearly 14 million vehicles manufactured in India so far. This total includes approximately 10 million vehicles sold in the domestic market and around four million exported to overseas destinations.

Localisation Target: Hyundai Aims for 92% by 2032

Alongside production growth, Hyundai is working to increase the share of components sourced from Indian suppliers. The company currently sources approximately 83% of its components locally at the Tier-1 supplier level.

According to Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarun Garg, Hyundai's localisation network includes more than 1,200 localised components and around 200 Indian supplier partners.

The company aims to raise its localisation level to 92% by 2032. Increasing domestic sourcing could strengthen supply-chain resilience, deepen partnerships with Indian manufacturers and reduce reliance on imported components.

Higher localisation also supports the broader development of India's automotive manufacturing ecosystem by creating opportunities for domestic suppliers to participate in vehicle production.

India's Passenger Vehicle Market Creates Growth Opportunities

Hyundai's expansion plans come against the backdrop of substantial growth in India's passenger vehicle industry. The market has grown from approximately 3.7 lakh vehicles in 1998 to an estimated 52.5 lakh units in 2026.

This expansion reflects rising vehicle ownership, evolving consumer preferences and demand for a wider range of passenger vehicles. Increasing production capacity would help Hyundai prepare for the market's potential future growth.

The company is also adapting its product strategy to changing preferences, particularly the growing popularity of SUVs and vehicles powered by alternative technologies.

Hyundai Expands SUV, CNG, Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Portfolio

HMIL is working to broaden its range of vehicles to cater to customers seeking different body styles and powertrain options. Its strategy includes SUVs, compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, electric vehicles and hybrids.

According to figures shared by the company, SUVs recorded year-on-year growth of 29%, while CNG vehicles grew by 40% and electric vehicles by 77%.

These trends underline the importance of offering multiple powertrain choices as consumers consider factors such as running costs, convenience, technology and environmental impact.

Compact Electric SUV and Bayon Planned

Hyundai plans to introduce a mass-market compact electric SUV later in the current financial year. The company also plans to bring the Bayon as part of its broader product strategy.

The planned additions are intended to strengthen Hyundai's presence in growing vehicle categories and broaden its appeal to different customer groups. Specific launch dates and other product details will depend on the company's announcements.

Mid-Size SUV Segment Records Strong Growth

The mid-size SUV category has emerged as an important growth area in India's passenger vehicle market. According to the figures provided by Hyundai, the segment expanded from 1.1 lakh units in 2015 to 8.7 lakh units in 2026.

This represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 21%, compared with around 6% for the overall passenger vehicle market.

The faster expansion of the mid-size SUV segment highlights the opportunities available to automakers with competitive products in this category. Hyundai's focus on expanding its SUV range is aligned with this trend.

Hyundai's Long-Term Strategy for Manufacturing and Exports

Hyundai's plans combine three key priorities: expanding production, increasing the use of locally sourced components and diversifying its vehicle portfolio.

The higher production target is intended to support future demand, while greater localisation could strengthen the company's domestic supply chain. At the same time, new SUV and electric vehicle offerings may help Hyundai respond to changing market preferences.

Together, these initiatives are designed to reinforce the company's competitiveness in India and support its domestic sales and export operations.

Conclusion

Hyundai Motor India is targeting annual production capacity of 1.14 million vehicles by 2030 and component localisation of 92% by 2032. Supported by a stronger supplier network and an expanding SUV and alternative-powertrain portfolio, the strategy aims to position the automaker for India's evolving passenger vehicle market and future export opportunities.
