News Synopsis

Hyundai Motor India Limited has refreshed the EXTER compact SUV for 2026, introducing updated styling, improved safety features, and enhanced connectivity. With prices beginning at ₹5.79 lakh (ex-showroom), the updated model aims to strengthen its position in India’s competitive sub-₹10 lakh SUV segment.

Hyundai EXTER 2026 Launch and Pricing Details

Hyundai has officially launched the updated EXTER compact SUV in India on March 20, 2026, from its Gurugram headquarters. The revised model is priced between ₹5,79,900 for the base petrol manual variant and ₹9,41,900 for the top-end AMT petrol version (ex-showroom).

The lineup includes 15 variants spanning petrol manual, petrol AMT, and CNG manual options. The Hy-CNG Duo variants are priced between ₹6,99,900 and ₹9,40,900. Customers can book the SUV through authorized dealerships or via Hyundai’s online platform with a token amount of ₹11,000.

Designed for Young and Aspirational Buyers

According to Tarun Garg, the updated EXTER is tailored for “young and ambitious India,” reflecting the evolving preferences of buyers in the compact SUV segment. With over two lakh units sold since its debut in 2023, the EXTER has already built a strong customer base.

The latest update focuses on enhancing design, safety, and technology to meet rising expectations in a highly competitive category.

Exterior Enhancements for a Sportier Look

The 2026 EXTER receives noticeable styling upgrades that give it a more aggressive and modern appearance. A redesigned front bumper and a new black radiator grille with a central garnish contribute to a wider stance.

The SUV now rides on newly designed R15 diamond-cut alloy wheels, while a wing-type rear spoiler enhances its sporty appeal. Additional updates include refreshed C-pillar detailing, revised tailgate garnish, and added wheel arch cladding, reinforcing its SUV identity.

Hyundai has also introduced two new colour options—Golden Bronze and Titanium Black Matte—expanding the palette to eight choices, including a dual-tone Ranger Khaki with a black roof.

Segment-Leading Dimensions and Practicality

The EXTER continues to stand out in its segment with its dimensions. It measures 3,830 mm in length, 1,723 mm in width, and 1,643 mm in height (with roof rails), making it one of the tallest SUVs in its class.

With a wheelbase of 2,450 mm, Hyundai claims it offers superior cabin space, especially for rear-seat passengers. The petrol variants provide a boot space of 391 litres, ensuring practicality for daily use and longer journeys.

Refined Interior with Premium Touches

Inside the cabin, Hyundai has introduced a dual-tone Navy and Grey theme complemented by a 3D carbon-pattern dashboard finish. The inclusion of a D-cut steering wheel and metal pedals adds a sporty character to the interior.

Comfort and convenience have also been improved. Features like driver seat height adjustment and adjustable rear headrests are now standard across all variants. A folding armrest for the driver and updated seat upholstery further enhance the cabin experience.

Advanced Technology and Connectivity Features

The updated EXTER brings significant upgrades in terms of technology. A segment-first dashcam has been introduced, offering added security in urban driving conditions.

Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included, along with a rear Type-C USB charging port. Hyundai’s Bluelink connected car system now offers over 60 features, including remote vehicle control, tracking, and emergency assistance.

Additionally, the system supports more than 300 voice commands that can function offline, making it useful in areas with limited connectivity. Features like an electric sunroof, digital instrument cluster, and over-the-air updates continue from the previous version.

Engine and Performance Remain Unchanged

The EXTER retains its reliable 1.2-litre four-cylinder Kappa petrol engine. Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual transmission or an AMT gearbox.

Hyundai highlights that this is one of the few vehicles in the segment to offer a four-cylinder engine, which delivers smoother performance compared to the commonly used three-cylinder units by competitors.

Hy-CNG Duo: Practical Dual-Cylinder Setup

The CNG variants, marketed as Hy-CNG Duo, feature a dual-cylinder layout paired with the same petrol engine. This configuration optimizes boot space while maintaining practicality.

A key improvement is the inclusion of an underbody-mounted spare wheel, freeing up luggage space. The CNG variants offer a boot capacity of 225 litres, making them suitable for both city commutes and longer trips.

Enhanced Safety Across All Variants

Safety is a major highlight of the updated EXTER. The SUV now offers over 45 safety features, with 30 available as standard across all variants.

Key standard features include six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC). This move addresses earlier criticism and aligns with growing consumer demand for improved safety in entry-level vehicles.

Competing in a Crowded Compact SUV Market

The compact SUV segment in India remains highly competitive, with strong rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Tata Punch, and Renault Kiger.

With rapid advancements in features, safety, and pricing, continuous updates are essential. Hyundai’s refreshed EXTER aims to stay relevant and appealing to modern buyers seeking value, style, and technology within a budget.

Conclusion

The updated Hyundai EXTER brings a balanced mix of style, safety, and technology enhancements while retaining its proven powertrain. With improved standard features and competitive pricing, it is well-positioned to attract both new buyers and existing customers looking to upgrade within the compact SUV segment.
