News Synopsis

Amazon plans to increase the cost on its Prime services to UK clients due to the increase in operational costs. Starting in September, monthly memberships will increase from by PS1 up to PS8.99 and the annual subscription will increase from PS79 to PS95.

Amazon claimed that the price increase which was the first time it has occurred for the UK since 2014, was due to the rise in inflation that is currently at its highest in 40 years. Other streaming services like Netflix have also raised subscription fees despite indications that people are starting to reduce their use of streaming services.

Yet, Amazon Prime offers more than its streaming service. Prime also provides unlimited delivery of merchandise. Amazon announced that its new prices would start in September or on the time of the customer's next renewal date. Amazon also stated that the option of switching into an annual subscription or canceling of membership was an alternative.

The decision is coming at a time that most households are seeking to reduce their expenditure, and the cost of goods increasing at the fastest rate for 40 years. Analyst in the field of retail, Natalie Berg, who has written a book on how Amazon will influence the future of shopping, stated that the Prime price increase was "not at all a shock" following the fact that Amazon increased its price to Prime across the US in February.

"It is a bold decision to increase prices right into the middle of most severe cost-of-living crisis of our time However, Amazon is essential to a lot of consumers and they Amazon know this," she told. "Amazon is so deeply integrated into our lives that a lot of people are willing to accept the cost of the hike," she added.
