News Synopsis

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the government-owned telecom operator, has made a significant move to improve its network infrastructure across India. As part of its ambitious nationwide expansion, BSNL has installed nearly 84,000 new 4G towers. This strategic deployment aims to enhance mobile connectivity for over 9 crore users across both urban and rural regions, while laying the foundation for a future 5G rollout.

Massive 4G Expansion to Strengthen BSNL Network

In an effort to solve long-standing network issues and compete with private telecom players, BSNL is executing a large-scale plan to install 1 lakh 4G towers using indigenous technology. According to recent updates shared by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), 83.99% of this project has already been completed. This translates to nearly 84,000 towers now live and operational.

The DoT shared this progress via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, accompanied by a short video highlighting BSNL’s ongoing infrastructure work. The development underscores BSNL’s commitment to providing robust mobile services to its vast subscriber base.

Improved Connectivity for 9 Crore Subscribers

BSNL’s 4G tower installation drive is expected to bring significant improvements in call quality, data speeds, and overall service reliability. The initiative targets more than 9 crore mobile users spread across India's vast geographic and demographic landscape. By covering both densely populated urban centers and remote rural areas, BSNL aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure equitable access to quality mobile services.

5G Rollout Expected by Mid-2025

The installation of 4G infrastructure is not only meant to enhance current service quality but also to serve as a stepping stone toward BSNL's entry into the 5G market. Industry reports suggest that once the 1 lakh towers are fully deployed, BSNL plans to launch its 5G services, potentially by June 2025.

With competitors like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel already offering 5G services in multiple cities, BSNL’s timely rollout will be critical for regaining market share and relevance.

Government Support Accelerates Network Modernization

BSNL has received substantial financial backing from the Indian government to fast-track its telecom infrastructure modernization. This support has enabled the telecom giant to implement high-capacity 4G towers using locally-developed technology. The investment not only benefits users but also supports the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by reducing dependency on foreign telecom equipment.

Mother’s Day Special: Recharge Offers for Users

To celebrate Mother’s Day, BSNL has announced limited-time promotional offers for prepaid users, valid between May 7 and May 14. During this promotional window, subscribers can enjoy extended validity and discounts on select plans.

Key offers include:

  • The ₹1,499 plan now offers 365 days of validity, up from 336 days.

  • The ₹1,999 plan validity has been extended to 380 days, instead of the usual 365 days.

  • Users can also avail a 5% discount on three selected recharge plans.

To claim these benefits, recharges must be done via the official BSNL website or the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) app.

BSNL’s Strategy to Win Back Market Share

By rapidly expanding its 4G infrastructure and offering user-centric recharge deals, BSNL is making an aggressive push to re-establish its presence in the Indian telecom sector. The combination of improved network coverage, digital innovation, and competitive pricing reflects BSNL's broader strategy to attract and retain loyal customers.

Conclusion

BSNL’s installation of nearly 84,000 new 4G towers marks a transformative phase for the telecom operator. With plans to launch 5G by mid-2025 and special offers to keep customers engaged, BSNL is positioning itself as a serious contender in the competitive telecom space. This revitalized focus on service quality and user benefits is expected to strengthen the brand's appeal across India.
