While Amazon is focusing on developing advanced AI software to power these robots, the hardware will initially be sourced from third-party robotics companies. This modular approach enables Amazon to concentrate on software innovation while leveraging existing robotic designs.

This rapid delivery is made possible by AI models that help Amazon forecast demand, optimize inventory placement, and streamline order fulfillment.
These transformer-based AI models, introduced in 2020, not only assist in predicting what customers will buy but also help warehouse robots operate more efficiently, avoiding collisions and improving workflow within Amazon’s massive fulfillment centers.
Concerns Over Job Losses and Environmental Impact
While these innovations offer clear operational advantages, they’ve also raised important concerns. One of the most significant is the impact on employment. Between 2021 and 2023, the number of robots in Amazon warehouses more than doubled, sparking fears that automation may gradually replace human workers in logistics and fulfillment roles.
Environmentalists have also raised red flags about the energy consumption of generative AI systems. These large models require vast computational resources, which translate into high electricity usage—potentially increasing Amazon’s carbon footprint despite its climate commitments.
