News Synopsis

Former Google executive Greg Tomb, the president of the video conferencing platform Zoom, has been fired.

The company stated in a regulatory statement that Mr. Tomb's contract was abruptly terminated "without cause".

The businessman had taken over the role in June 2022, and since then, he has actively participated in earnings calls and managed the company's sales.

According to a Zoom representative, the tech company is not looking for a replacement.

Mr. Tomb answered directly to Zoom's CEO Eric Yuan, who founded the company in 2011 and presided over its success as one of the pandemic's biggest winners.

Because of the need for people to stay at home and the rise in screen time, Zoom became well-known.

Zoom calls were used for weddings and funerals, and the business estimated that 300 million people were using Zoom calls every day by April 2020.

Mr. Yuan expressed excitement at the potential Mr. Tomb would bring to the leadership team at the time of his hiring, stating that Mr. Tomb Greg is a highly respected technology industry leader and has deep experience in helping to scale companies at critical junctures."

Mr. Tomb expressed his excitement at joining the group and contributing to "drive growth" as businesses all over the world handled their communication requirements.

The company, however, has had a difficult time maintaining its pandemic boom and, like many companies in the computer industry, has been forced to lay off staff.

Zoom tripled its workforce in two years during the pandemic, but the company reduced 15% of its workforce, or 1,300 people, in February to deal with declining demand.

"We didn't take as much time as we should have to thoroughly analyze our teams or assess if we were growing sustainably, toward the highest priorities,"  according to Mr. Yuan.

Zoom might be overtaken by competing services like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Slack as businesses seek to reduce expenses in the face of a downturn in the economy.

Zoom is attempting to expand. It revealed intentions to incorporate email and calendar features as well as a chatbot to assist users with troubleshooting last year. Also in development is Zoom Sports.
