News Synopsis

YouTube said on Wednesday, that more than 1.5 billion people participate in the Shorts video service each month, which competes with the global sensation TikTok. YouTube and Meta both added short-term video-sharing platforms to their services after TikTok announced that it has topped a billion users.

YouTube Shorts was released two years ago, with less than 60 seconds of video added to the platform offerings. "Shorts has really taken off and are now being watched by over 1.5 billion logged-in users every month," said Neil Mohan, YouTube's Chief Product Officer.

Last year, YouTube funded $100 million to "reward creators" whose video clips take viewers to the online stage. YouTube also leveraged Silicon Valley's tech titan advertising skills to help creators monetize content on the platform. This resulted in billions of dollars in revenue in 2021.

TikTok, owned by China-based company ByteDance, allowed users to upload slightly longer videos earlier this year, increasing the maximum length from 3 minutes to 10 minutes. YouTube, Meta, and TikTok are competing to become the best platform for popular online personalities with revenue-generating features such as subscriptions and advertising revenue shares.
