News Synopsis

The largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea has confirmed that the platform was hacked and around 32 users have lost NFTs worth $1.7 million. The CEO and co-founder Devin Finzer acknowledged the phishing attack and confirmed that 32 users lost their NFTs.

He also said that the rumors about the hack being $200 million were false. The blockchain investigator Peckshield said that a possible leak of user information fuelled the pushing attack.

The hack took place after OpenSea announced a new smart contract upgrade with a one-week deadline to delist inactive NFTs on the platform. The new upgrade required users to migrate their listed NFTs from ETH blockchain to a new smart contract.

Within hours of the announcement, reports across multiple sources emerged about an ongoing attack that targets soon-to-be delisted NFTs. The CEO of OpenSea urged attackers to direct message him on Twitter

The attack took place as the UK tax authority last week seized three NFTs as part of a probe into a 1.4 million pounds fraud case. The authority also claimed that it was the first UK law enforcement to seize an NFT.
