News Synopsis

WHO and UNICEF have started a nationwide Polio Vaccination in Afghanistan in three years. The official at Afghanistan’s Health Ministry has said that the campaign has started in different parts of the country but there is still a shortage of staff. WHO has said that the goal is to reach over 3 million children under the campaign and has the backing of the Taliban, which is helping to reach children in the areas that were previously inaccessible.

Ahmed Al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean has said that the contribution of the Taliban shows how they want to maintain the health system and want to take essential steps to avoid the outbreak of any other diseases.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the last countries, that are still suffering from endemic polio. With this campaign WHO aims to eliminate the disease completely.
