WhatsApp, owned by Meta, took robust action against user accounts in November 2023, banning over 7.1 million accounts during the month. In its India Monthly Report unveiled on January 1, WhatsApp disclosed that a staggering 7,196,000 accounts were banned between November 1 and November 30. Notably, 1,954,000 accounts were proactively banned before user reporting.

WhatsApp Account Bans and User Reporting:

The report detailed that WhatsApp received a total of 8,841 user reports addressed to the grievance officer. Out of these, 4,613 reports necessitated account bans. Additionally, the platform adhered to eight orders issued by India’s Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), established in February of the previous year to manage social media platform concerns.

WhatsApp reiterated its commitment to maintaining service integrity by using prevention and detection mechanisms against violations of its Terms and Services. The platform assured compliance with orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee, part of their grievance resolution framework.

Highlighting their preventive measures, WhatsApp revealed their multi-stage approach to address abusive behavior. This includes detection during registration, messaging, and response mechanisms activated upon negative feedback in the form of reports and blocks.
