Vi Shocks Users: ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ Program Discontinued, 130GB Free Data Lost
News Synopsis
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has delivered a major blow to its prepaid customers by discontinuing the popular ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ program. Launched in May 2024 as a limited-time offer, the program provided users with up to 130GB of free high-speed data annually, credited automatically through the Vi app. Now, millions of users will miss out on this benefit.
Vi Discontinues Popular Extra Data Program
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced the closure of its widely used ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ program for prepaid users. This program, initially launched in May 2024 as a limited-period offer, is no longer available, disappointing millions of customers who were benefiting from free high-speed data. The discontinuation results in a direct loss of up to 130GB of extra data per year for eligible users.
What Was the ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ Program?
The ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ program was introduced by Vodafone Idea for 5G smartphone users and customers who recently upgraded to new 4G smartphones. The goal was to enhance the user experience by providing additional free data.
According to Telecom Talk reports, under this program, users received a total of 130GB guaranteed extra data in a year. The data was credited automatically in 10GB monthly increments over 13 cycles, each lasting 28 days. Users could track and utilize their bonus data conveniently through the Vi app.
Data Loss for Users
With the program now discontinued, all users who benefited from it will face a direct loss. The 130GB of additional data, credited in monthly 10GB installments over 13 months, will no longer be available. This is a significant setback for customers who relied on this free data for daily usage, particularly those on ₹239 or higher daily unlimited plans.
Eligibility and Terms
Initially, the ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ offer was valid for users purchasing daily unlimited plans priced ₹239 or above. It was specifically targeted at 5G smartphone users and those who had upgraded to new 4G devices. Users availed the benefit through the Vi app, which automatically credited the extra data to their accounts.
States Where the Offer Was Not Available
It is important to note that the offer was not available in all states of India. At launch, Vi had excluded Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, North East, and Odisha. Customers in these states were never eligible for the extra data benefit.
2G Users Also Lose Benefits
Alongside the ‘Vi Guaranteed Extra Data’ program, Vodafone Idea has also discontinued the ‘Vi Guaranteed Program’ for prepaid users with 2G handsets. Launched in July 2025 (possibly a 2024 typo), this program provided two extra days of validity on unlimited voice recharges ₹199 or above, totaling 24 extra days per year. Both programs are no longer listed on the Vi app or website, indicating their official termination.
This move may reflect Vi’s promotional strategy changes or cost-cutting measures, directly affecting its prepaid subscribers.
