News Synopsis

The Stockholm-based organization makes its annual report based on the 50 years of democratic indicators. The country includes 160 countries and the analysis takes place under three different categories, including Backsliding Democracies, Hybrid Governments, and Authoritarian Regimes.

The organization has released its list for backsliding democracies and the USA has appeared on this list for the first time ever. The reason for this appearance is said to be visible deterioration that begin in 2019. The organization also pointed towards the campaign of former President Donald Trump who questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election. Many of Trump’s supporters stormed the White House on January 6. These are some of the acts that led the USA to be part of this list.

Other than the USA, the list also includes European countries, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia. The organization also said that Hungary, India, the Philippines, and the USA have come up with measures for democratic violation.
