News Synopsis

A $13.6 billion emergency package of military and humanitarian aid to the besieged Ukraine and its European allies easily obtained final approval from Congress

Democrats and Republicans have fought rising inflation, energy policy, and ongoing pandemic restrictions in this year's elections, but a campaign to send aid to Ukraine, where stubborn resilience against Brute Force has affected many voters.

About half of the $13.6 billion spent in the war went to Ukraine's armament and equipment, and to the Pentagon's cost of sending US troops to other Eastern European countries sceptical of neighbouring wars. Much of the rest included humanitarian and financial support, strengthening the defence of local allies, and protecting their energy supply and cybersecurity needs.

Republicans strongly supported this spending. But they acted too shy, like an unresolved dispute with Poland about how the country could give Ukrainian MiG fighters that pilots could fly.
