UP Pushes EVs, Public Transport After ₹3 Fuel Price Hike Amid Global Crisis

Amid rising fuel costs triggered by global tensions, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a series of measures to reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable mobility. Following a ₹3 per litre hike in petrol and diesel prices, the state is focusing on electric vehicles, public transport expansion, and energy conservation.

The decisions were finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Yogi Adityanath on May 11. The meeting focused on strategies to conserve fuel, improve public transport infrastructure, and encourage a shift towards cleaner energy alternatives.

Following the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary Archana Agarwal issued official directives to key departments, including the Transport Department and the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), to ensure swift implementation.

Incentives for Electric Vehicles and Public Transport

Tax Relief for EV Buyers

One of the major highlights of the government’s plan is the proposal to offer tax incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). Authorities have been asked to prepare a plan for exempting road tax and registration fees for EVs and public transport vehicles for the next 12 months.

This move is aimed at accelerating EV adoption across the state by making them more affordable for consumers and businesses alike. Lower upfront costs could encourage more people to shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

Expansion of Public Transport Services

To reduce reliance on private vehicles, the government has directed authorities to increase the frequency of buses, especially during peak hours. This step is expected to ease congestion while also cutting down fuel consumption.

Additionally, special bus services will be introduced for offices with more than 500 employees. These services will be jointly operated by the Transport Department and UPSRTC, offering a convenient alternative for daily commuters.

The government has also taken steps to optimise existing resources. Departments have been instructed to review and strengthen carpooling systems among employees.

At the same time, surplus official vehicles allotted to officers will be withdrawn. This measure is expected to significantly reduce unnecessary fuel usage and promote more efficient transportation practices within government departments.

Power Saving Guidelines

In addition to fuel conservation, the government has introduced measures to reduce electricity consumption. Officials have been directed to switch off unnecessary lights, particularly after 10 pm, in government offices and transport depots.

Regulating Air Conditioner Usage

To further conserve energy, air conditioners in government offices must now operate within a temperature range of 25–26 degrees Celsius. This standardised setting is expected to significantly reduce power consumption without compromising comfort.

Exploring Sustainable Alternatives: Biogas Model

The Uttar Pradesh government is also looking beyond immediate solutions by exploring renewable energy options. One such initiative involves studying the ‘Chandauli Model,’ which focuses on biogas-based energy generation.

Authorities have been asked to prepare a detailed plan to assess the feasibility of implementing this model at UPSRTC depots and workshops. If successful, this could provide a sustainable and cost-effective energy source for public transport operations.

CM Yogi Appeals for Public Support

Amid these developments, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged citizens to support the government’s efforts and adopt responsible energy consumption practices.

Addressing a public gathering, he emphasised the importance of national unity during challenging times, particularly in light of global energy uncertainties. He also highlighted that despite rising global fuel prices, India has managed to keep domestic rates relatively stable.

The Chief Minister echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message on responsible energy usage, encouraging citizens to use electricity judiciously and contribute to national efforts.
