News Synopsis

Amidst the ongoing Russian-Ukraine Conflict the United Nations requested an immediate ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol in order to evacuate the trapped civilians in the war-affected city. The United Nation's crisis coordinator for the war in Ukraine Amin Awad beseeched the Orthodox Easter holiday on Sunday in a plea to "focus on our common humanity." In a press release, Amin Awad said, "The lives of tens of thousands including women, children, and older people, are at stake in Mariupol. We need a pause in fighting right now to save lives. The longer we wait the more lives will be at risk. They must be allowed to safely evacuate now, today. Tomorrow could be too late."

As per the reports, around 100,000 civilians are trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol. Multiple attempts at humanitarian corridors to enable safe passage for civilians have failed. Russian armed forces have gained strong control in the city, however, Ukrainian leaders claim they maintain control of the city. On Saturday, Russian forces in Mariupol attempted to storm the Azovstal steel plant. As per the reports, around, 2,000 Ukrainian troops and 1,000 civilians have sought shelter in the steel plant.
