In a major initiative, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution sponsored by India on multilingualism, which first mentions Hindi for the first time.

The resolution passed on Friday encourages the United Nations to continue to disseminate important communications and messages in both official and non-official languages, including Hindi.

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador TS Tirmulti said that multilingualism is a core value of the United Nations and thanked the Secretary-General for prioritizing multilingualism.

As part of this effort, the Hindi @ UN project was launched in 2018, aimed to improve the approach to the United Nations in Hindi and to raise awareness of global issues among millions of Hindi-speaking people around the world. 

He further stated that multilingualism was truly accepted by the United Nations and that India will support the United Nations in achieving this goal. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the six official languages ​​of the United Nations. English and French are the working languages ​​of the United Nations Secretariat.
