News Synopsis

Ukraine is accepting Dogecoin donations to defend against Russia, and one of the country's top leaders is urging billionaire Elon Musk and other Dogecoin holders to support their war effort.

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov wrote in a tweet, “We are accepting donations in meme coin. Now even meme can support the army of Ukraine and save lives from Russian invaders.”

He posted the message after Russia apparently accelerated its attacks on the former Soviet Republic. Russian troops reportedly stepped up their attacks in  Kharkiv on Tuesday, launching rockets that attacked government agencies and residential areas.

Fedorov, who is also the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, included the address of Ukraine's official Dogecoin wallet in a message to about 180,000 Twitter followers.

The Ukrainian government thanked the "Global Cryptographic Community" for donations on Tuesday and said it was accepting donations from Polkadot, the native token of the Polkadot blockchain. Polkadot co-founder Gavin Wood sent $ 5 million worth of cryptocurrencies to Ukraine, according to a  tweet by Fedorov on Tuesday.

Blockchain analysis firm Merkle Science said on Wednesday that the Ukrainian government has received more than $ 52 million in cryptocurrency donations, along with state-supporting NGOs and DAOs. Ukraine's Polkadot wallet has had more than $ 6 million inbound transactions in the 24 hours since it began accepting, the company said.
